Answers to Common Smog Check Questions
Everything Citrus Heights drivers ask about California smog checks, our services, and what to expect.
How much is a smog check in Citrus Heights? +
A standard smog check in Citrus Heights typically runs $39.95 to $69.95 depending on vehicle type and whether the inspection is a Test Only or regular smog. How long does a smog check take? +
Most smog inspections at Citrus Heights Auto Smog take 15 to 30 minutes. Diesel and out-of-state inspections may take slightly longer because of additional documentation. No appointment needed — walk-ins welcome Monday through Saturday, 9 AM to 5 PM.
What years of cars need a smog check in California? +
In California, vehicles from 1976 or newer require biennial smog checks — except the 8 most recent model years of gasoline-powered vehicles. Diesel vehicles from 1998 or newer with a GVWR of 14,000 pounds or less also require smog checks. Motorcycles, electric vehicles, and very old pre-1976 vehicles are generally exempt.
Do hybrid vehicles need a smog check in California? +
Yes, hybrid vehicles need smog checks in California once they are more than 8 model years old. We perform hybrid smog tests using equipment and procedures specifically calibrated for hybrid systems. We inspect all major hybrid models including Toyota Prius, Honda Civic Hybrid, Ford Fusion Hybrid, and more.
Can I get a smog check for an out-of-state vehicle? +
Yes. If you're registering an out-of-state vehicle in California, it needs a smog inspection regardless of age or model year (with very few exceptions). We perform out-of-state smog inspections and submit results electronically to the DMV at no extra charge. Bring your title, out-of-state registration, and ID.
What is the difference between Test Only and regular smog stations? +
Test Only stations can only inspect vehicles — they cannot perform repairs. This eliminates any conflict of interest. If your DMV renewal notice directs you to a Test Only station (marked with a star on the notice), you must go to one. We offer both Test Only and regular smog services, so we can handle either requirement.
Do I need an appointment for a smog check? +
No appointment needed. Walk-ins are always welcome during business hours — Monday through Saturday, 9 AM to 5 PM. Most inspections are completed in 15 to 30 minutes while you wait. Mornings and mid-week tend to be the fastest.
What happens if my car fails the smog check? +
If your vehicle fails, you'll receive a detailed report showing exactly what caused the failure. California offers the Consumer Assistance Program (CAP) which may help cover repair costs for qualifying income-eligible vehicle owners. After repairs are completed, you'll need to return for a retest to obtain your certificate.
How do I pass a smog check? +
To give your car the best chance of passing: make sure your check engine light is off, fill the gas tank (low fuel can cause failures), get an oil change if you're overdue, warm up the engine by driving for 20+ minutes before the test, and don't clear recent diagnostic trouble codes — the system needs driving time to be ready.
What payment methods do you accept? +
We accept cash, all major credit cards (Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover), and most debit cards. Payment is taken at the time of service.
